Summary
UNDP's programme interventions on gender equality under the Delivering as One UN Country Programme 2008-2011 , had as its fourth outcome that By 2012, women and girls experience fewer gender inequalities in PNG are relevant to the National Goals and Directive Principles which calls for equality of opportunity, as well as the 1995 National Women's Platform for Action's critical areas of concern for women?s equality which required addressing ineffective government mechanisms, advocating and promoting the rights of women. In the absence of legal or constitutional references to gender based violence, the Preamble to the Constitution specifically provides that the people of Papua New Guinea reject violence and seek consensus as a means of solving our common problem. More specific focus on equality issues, however, is given in the Government's Medium-Term Development Strategy (MTDS) 2005-10 regards gender equity (as) both a moral and constitutional obligation for government. While the ultimate goal is yet to be achieved in the country, the Women in Leadership (WIL) project in particular produced key outputs such as relevant legislation for both nominated and reserved seats, undertook a consultative review and revision of the national women's policy, as well as the key national machineries for women's empowerment, and developed and implemented an effective communications and advocacy strategy. Clearly, the basis has been established for subsequent strategic support to Government of Papua New Guinea to achieve gender equality. Therefore, programme sustainability needs to be examined from a longer term perspective with already established networks in public, private and civil society organisations which will contribute to mobilize additional funding required for expansion of the initiatives.
