Summary
Has been mainly successful in rehabilitating canals, providing flood relief, improving irrigation and water supply, increasing arable land (from 3500 to 1600 ha) and contributing to peaceful coexistence of beneficiaries. However, oversettlement has led to competition among communities. Also, high levels of silt requiring training for annual desilting. Recommendations are: technical changes to minimize silt and salinity in fields, barrage contruction, hiring of maintenance staff and development of maintenance manual and formation of a Middle Shabelle River Authority (MSRA), or similar to preside over the integrated management of the water resources in the region.
