The overall objective of the project is to increase the welfare of herding families through the sustainable management of Mongolian grasslands. The main mechanism to achieve the project goal is to strengthen and formalize existing customary herder community institutions and to strengthen linkages between them and formal govern-ance structures and the private sector. The geographical scope of the project is the grasslands of 12 soums on the territories of Selenge, Uvurkhangai and Bayankhongor aimags. The intervention covers ap-proximately 491 714 ha area (14.4 %) out of the 3 409 904 ha of the total pasture area of those 12 soums. Project components include individual (herders, local train-ers, bag and soum authorities and officers), institutional (herder organizations, bag and soum governments, central administration) and systemic (policy research and development) capacity development for grassland management planning, implementation, and monitoring as well as livelihood activities development. This project has made significant contribution among others to improve pasture productivity in the 12 target soums of 3 aimags: herder group formation and cooperation to implement simple and efficient pasture management measures such as pasture rotation and resting, meth-ods to improve pasture and hayfields and to restore abandoned crop fields, devel-opment of herders capacity to assess their pasture carrying capacity and to contrib-ute to participatory pasture monitoring and research, and establishment of a sustain-able financing mechanism at soum level dedicated to pasture improvement.
